Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses acoustic waves to treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions. These high-energy acoustic waves are applied to the affected area, initiating a healing response by stimulating metabolism and enhancing blood circulation. Shockwave therapy has been proven effective in treating conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and calcific tendinitis of the shoulder, among others. The treatment is relatively quick, usually lasting around 15-20 minutes per session, and is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to resume their daily activities shortly after.

The effectiveness of shockwave therapy stems from its ability to stimulate the body's natural healing processes, promoting tissue regeneration and pain relief. While the exact mechanism of how shockwave therapy works is not fully understood, it is believed to trigger an inflammatory response in the affected tissue, leading to increased blood flow and the formation of new blood vessels, which ultimately accelerates the healing process. Shockwave therapy is considered a safe and viable alternative for those who have not responded to other conservative treatments and wish to avoid more invasive procedures, such as surgery.
